Extrinsic Motivation Extrinsic motivation comes from an outside source- includes both tangible and intangible More temporary • Praise and encouragement • Applause from crowd • Medals and trophies • Certificates • Swimming grades as you progress • Money • Good way of attracting newcomers to an activity, young performers like to receive rewards. • However they should not be used all time as they will enjoy the trophy more than the game itself • Overuse of extrinsic motivation to devalue and limit intrinsic motivation
Intrinsic Motivation Intrinsic motivation comes from within the performer More permanent • Feelings of pride • Reaching the top of a mountain • Self satisfaction • Winning a major competition • Enjoyment • Scoring a goal • More desirable as it is a more permanent way of maintaining interest • Coach should gradually decrease extrinsic rewards and replace them with intrinsic. • Setting personal goals and giving ownership of these goals can increase intrinsic motivation
Methods of motivation • Sessions should be FUN • Adjusting training environment • Ensure players can play against those of similar ability • Role Models • Coaches can use player of a good ability (not star players) so it seems achievable. • Success should be attributed to internal factors • Coaching explaining they won due to effort and ability • Reward specific behaviour • Emphasise that better performance is the direct result of an improvement. • Consider performer’s personality • Some enjoy limelight whereas other will prefer praise away from other people • Praise should be given as soon as possible • Being awarded man of the match after a game will motivate and reinforce behaviour. • Set SMARTER goals
