Thepathshetooktowardbusinessownershipwasa strategicone.Aftergraduation,Coyneimmediately placedGarzainherfirstjob. “ItwasmoreplumbingthanI expected,” shesaid, “andI’mnotaplumber.” Shespenta yearinthepositionbutaskedCoyneformorejob placementassistance.Ineachsubsequentposition,she learnedmoreandmoreabouttheindustryasshehoned herskills. “Istartedmysoleproprietorship15yearsago,” Garzasays,evenasshecontinuedtoworkwithother companies. “Igotalotofexperiencewithcompanies,but thatexpandedtoappliances.” Workwassteadyuntil abouteightyearsago. “TheHVACindustrytookadip,” sheremembers. “Ithinktheweatherhadalottodowith it.” Chicagoin2010sawafairlytemperateclimate,andthe demandsforheatingandairconditioningdwindled.Itwas difficulttogetsteadywork.
