About Us Hi, I’m Tracey, and my Somewhat Green journey started in March 2019. My light bulb moment (or Oprah ‘Ah ah!’ moment) happened when I wanted to get my step-grandchildren some gifts. So, we called to a department store and picked up a heap of presents. I was amazed at how cheap everything was. The presents filled the boot! Instead of going “straight to the pool room” as toys to be treasured forever, some went straight to the bin. There was a plastic cricket set that broke immediately, a bat that didn’t fit the plastic ball, and a plastic golf stick that wasn’t even strong enough to hit the plastic ball it came with. I said to myself: “Flipping heck! What did I just fall into? Mass consumerism. Buying excessive amounts of stuff, none of which is good for the environment. “And, even worse, buying things that went straight to landfill with barely a single use. This wasn’t single-use plastic – this was no-use plastic!” I then started thinking of other things I buy in everyday life that I don’t need. My main goal now is to reduce the amount of stuff I buy. My thinking is simple: if everyone buys quality there will be less need for recycling and landfill. In other words, we can reduce the long-term impact on the environment of what we buy by moving away from being a throw-away society.
