European Aggressors on the March Hitler had long pledged to undo the Versailles Treaty Treaty limited size of Germany’s army March 1935: Hitler announced that Germany wouldn’t obey restrictions League’s failure to stop Germany from rearming convinced Hitler to take greater risks March 7, 1936: German troops moved into Rhineland British urged appeasement- giving in to an aggressor to keep the peace Strengthened Hitler power & prestige Balance of power changed for Germany France & Belgium now open to attack Weak response from France & Britain encouraged Hitler to speed up expansion Germany Allied with Italy & Japan (Axis Powers)

Democratic Nations Try to Preserve Peace Instead of taking a stand against Fascist aggression, Britain & France repeatedly made concessions in hope of keeping peace Horrors of WWI created desire to avoid war Many Americans supported Isolationism Belief that political ties to other countries should be avoided Nov 5, 1937: Hitler announced plans to absorb Austria & Czechoslovakia into the Third Reich (German Empire) Versailles Treaty prohibited union between Austria & Germany March 1938: Hitler sent army to Austria & annexed it Hitler then turned to Czechoslovakia

Britain & France Choose Appeasement France & Britain were preparing for war Sept 29, 1938: Munich Conference held Meeting proposed by Mussolini of Germany, France, Britain, & Italy in Munich, Germany Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain believed that he could preserve peace by giving in to Hitler’s demand Winston Churchill strongly disagreed Less than 6 months after Munich, Hitler took Czechoslovakia Hitler than demanded that Poland return to Germany Germany & Russia pledged never to attack
