Aggressor: Japan • 1920’s- Japan had been more democratic- had a constitution, signed Kellogg-Briand Pact renouncing war • Great Depression strikes- people blame the government • Military leaders take over control of the government, but keep Emperor Hirohito as head of state • Are extreme nationalists • Want to solve economic problems by building a Pacific Empire • Invades Manchuria in 1931 • Invade China in 1937 resulting in the “Rape of Nanking”

  5. Aggressor: Italy • Mussolini wants a colonial empire • Italy invades Ethiopia (Africa) in 1935 • Italy’s superior technology defeats Ethiopians • League of Nations did not step in to stop the invasion

Aggressor: Germany • Hitler ignores the Treaty of Versailles • League of Nations does not stop Germany • March 1936- Hitler invades the Rhineland- Britain and France “Appease” Hitler by giving in • Germany’s power is strengthened by this, Hitler sees France and Britain as weak • Hitler and Mussolini make an alliance- Rome-Berlin Axis- Japan joins- Axis powers formed. • Nov 1937- Hitler takes control of Austria and invades Czechoslovakia to create the Third Reich (Empire) • Munich Conference- September 1938- France and Britain allow Hitler to take the Sudetenland (appeasement) • Russia (Stalin) and Germany (Hitler) sign a non-aggression pact

  7. Aggressor: Spain • Spain was a monarchy until 1931 • Revolt- Francisco Franco emerges- Fascist • 3 year civil war • Hitler and Mussolini assist Franco • 1939- Franco becomes dictator of Spain
