Western Struggles • Conflict arose between settlers and native Americans as settlers expanded westward • 1791 Native Americans continued to resist settlers • 1794 Washington sends Anthony Wayne • Battle of Fallen Timbers Wayne’s forces defeat 800 native Americans • 1795 Treaty of Greenville – Native Americans surrender most of their lands in Ohio
Issues with Europe • 1789 – French Revolution • 1793 Britain and France go to war • Washington hoped America would stay neutral • 1793 – French diplomat Edmund Gene’tsigns up a few hundred Americans to serve aboard French ships and attack British shipping • Washington issues Proclamation of Neutrality
Issues with Europe • Britain begins attacking American merchant ships and impressing their crews • Washington sends John Jay to Britain to resolve the issue • Jay’s Treaty • Britain withdraws from American soil • Pays damages for ships they seized • Allows some Americans to trade w/ British colonies in the Caribbean
Issues with Europe • Pinckney sent to Spain to resolve issues in 1795 • Pinckney’s Treaty opened up access to the entire Mississippi River to Americans and allowed them to trade in New Orleans
Washington’s Farewell • Washington served two terms setting a precedent for others to follow • Farewell Address warned against: • Foreign alliances • Political parties • National debt
