Project Based Learning at Elliott Elementary Community Learning Center
You should eat • 3 servings of • low-fat dairy a day!! got milk?
What we liked… • Student input and leadership • Freedom to be creative • Tangible products to share • Projects with purpose
…and not so much • Unstructured • Lack of rigor • Not as many planned activities • Undefined roles of teacher/students • Above student’s capacity?
Our Second Attempt • Real life examples of PBL for K-5 students • Kindergarteners making educational cook books to share with families • 5th graders research cell-phone plans and present the information to their parents • It can be done!
Driving Question • Is the anchor for the project • Can work backwards from DQ • A mix of student voice and teacher guidance
Driving Question How can we, as_____(role), ________(do/solve/create a product) for/to/that (purpose and audience)?
Our second attempt • K-1’s project on diversity • 2-3’s project on hunger
Reflections on PBL • Intimidating at first, but manageable • Meant for all ages • Role of teacher changes • Role of the student changes • But significant learning stays the same (or increases!)
