  3. Significant Numbers Learning Intention Success Criteria • Understand what the term significant figure means. • We are learning about the term significant figure. www.mathsrevision.com • Apply knowledge to problems. Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  4. 506 cm 50.6 cm 0.506 cm 0.00506 cm Significant Numbers MNU 3-03a • In mathematics a figure or digit is significant • if it gives an idea of both: • Quantity • Accuracy IMPORTANT : If zero’s are employed just to position the decimal point then they are considered NOT significant. www.mathsrevision.com e.g. Has 3 significant figures. Has 3 significant figures. Has 3 significant figures. Has 3 significant figures. Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  5. Significant Figures Level 4+ Rounding 0.001090 To the left of the number Middle of the number To the right of the number www.mathsrevision.com Always Significant Not Significant Always Significant Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  6. Significant Figures Level 4+ Example : How many significant figure for each number. 3 There are 500 pennies in £5. 1 There are 800 pupils in St. Ninian’s. 3 There are 360o in a circle. www.mathsrevision.com 4 The height of toy is 1.309 metres 2 A strand of hair is 0.040mm wide. 7. Rounding Significant Figures Level 4+ Now try TJN4+ Ex 1.1 Ch1 (page 6) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  8. Starter Questions www.mathsrevision.com 42o Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  9. Estimating Using Sig. Fig. to Estimate Answers Learning Intention Success Criteria • 1. We are learning how to estimate an answer using significant figures. 2. Estimate the answer to a calculation using significant figures. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  10. Estimating Using Sig. Fig. to Estimate Answers It is very important when solving problems that we have a rough idea of the answer we are expecting. Example : Mentally estimate the answer to 42 x 49 by rounding each number to 1 sig. fig. first. www.mathsrevision.com 40 x 50 = 400 x 5 = 2000 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  11. Estimating Using Sig. Fig. to Estimate Answers Example : Mentally estimate the answer to 104 x 19 by rounding each number to 1 sig. fig. first. 100 x 20 = 1000 x 2 = 2000 www.mathsrevision.com Example : Mentally estimate the answer to 878 ÷ 27 by rounding each number to 1 sig. fig. first. 900 ÷ 30 = 90 ÷ 3 = 30 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  12. Estimating Using Sig. Fig. to Estimate Answers Level 4+ Now try TJN4+ Ex 1.2 Ch1 (page 7) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  13. Starter Questions www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  14. BODMAS Learning Intention Success Criteria 1. Understand the order of calculations. • 1 We are learning the order of calculations using BODMAS. 2. Use BODMAS to evaluate complicated calculations. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  15. BODMAS Calculations MUST BE done in a certain order. We can use BODMAS to help us remember the order. B - O - D - M - A - S - Brackets x and ÷ same priority Other www.mathsrevision.com Division Multiplication + and - same priority Addition Subtraction Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  16. BODMAS 9 – half of 10 + 2 200 – 25 x 2 = 9 – 5 + 2 = 200 – 50 = 4 + 2 = 150 www.mathsrevision.com = 6 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  17. BODMAS 4 x ( 48 + 12) + 10 80 ÷ (8 – 3) = 4 x 60 + 10 = 80 ÷ 5 = 240 + 10 = 16 www.mathsrevision.com = 250 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  18. BODMAS (8 - 3) ² 8² – 3² = 5² = 64 - 9 = 25 = 55 www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  19. BODMAS Now try TJN4+ Ex 1.3 Ch1 (page 8) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  20. Integers Learning Intention Success Criteria 1. Understand the operations for integers. • 1 We are learning revising integers. 2. Use BODMAS to evaluate complicated integer problems. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  21. Starter Questions Write down the rules for integers www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  22. Think Thermometer Taking away a negative is the same as adding Positive and negative whole numbers including 0. e.g. -2, -1, 0, 5, 100 (-3) + 5 = 2 (-9) + (-8) = -17 (-4) - (-9) = 5 (-2) – 10 = -12 Integers Addition & Subtraction Multiplication & Division (-2) x 10 = -20 (-2) x (-4) = 8 Remember order of operation BODMAS Different signs = - answer Same signs = + answer (-16) ÷ (-8) = 2 (-27) ÷ 3 = -9 4 – ((-5) –(-2))2÷ 3 = 1

  23. Have you updated your Learning Log ? BODMAS Now try TJN4+ Ex 1.4 Ch1 (page 9) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.
