  2. Classes of Animals • 6 type of animal classes • They are: Mammals, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, Fish, and Insects

  3. Mammals • Have a vertebrate, or backbone • Covered in hair or fur • Warm blooded • Environment is on land and water • Give birth to their offspring • Categorized into 3 groups: Monotremes, Marsupials, and Placentas • Ex. Humans, Bears, Lions, Dogs, Cats

  4. Reptiles • Have a vertebrate • Body temperature is cold blooded • Skin is covered with scales • Most reptiles lay eggs • Environment is on land • Ex. Snakes, Lizards, Alligators, Turtles

  5. Amphibians • Have a vertebrate • Body temperature is cold blooded but their body temperature adapts to their environment • Spend part of their life in water, the other on land • Generally born in water. They can breathe with gills. Then metamorphosis occurs, where they learn to live on land. • Skin is soft and moist, no scales • Lay eggs in moist areas • Webbed Feet • Ex. Frogs, Newts, Salamanders, Toads

  6. Birds • Have a vertebrate • Many species • Lay Eggs • Predominantly feathers, legs have scales • Warm blooded • Birds have wings which allow them to fly, and have talons or claws for hunting • Environment is on land • Ex. Eagles, Doves, Ostriches, Peacocks, Turkey

  7. Fish • Have a vertebrate • Are totally aquatic, meaning their environment is water • Cold Blooded • Covered in scales, (few exceptions) • Lay eggs • Breathe through gills, and move through water using their fins • Ex. Sharks, Tuna, Catfish, Swordfish

  8. Insects • Invertebrate, meaning they have no backbone • Three main body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen • Have a hard exoskeleton • Insects can walk fly and jump • Environment is on land • Have 3 pairs of legs and 2 pairs of wings • Lay eggs • Cold Blooded • Ex. Preying Mantis, Grasshopper, Ants, Crickets
