The Hydrosphere Links the • Atmosphere – water vapor • Biosphere – living things • Lithosphere – rivers, lakes, oceans, ground water • Cryosphere – ice, snow, and permafrost
What is the water cycle? • The continuous movement of water on Earth’s surface from atmosphere, to land, oceans, and back • Water covers 2/3 of earth surface
Stages of the Water Cycle • Evapotranspiration – all the liquid water that is turned into water vapor by: • Evaporation from the soil, oceans, and other surfaces • Transpiration from organisms
Condensation – the change of state from a gas (water vapor) into a liquid (water) • Formation of clouds and dewdrops
Precipitation – any form of water that falls to the Earth • Rain, snow, sleet, hail • On land becomes runoff or groundwater
Water Budget • Does Precipitation = evapotranspiration? • Influenced by • Temperature • Wind • Vegetation • Rainfall • Season
Water Conservation • Fresh water is limited • We must use it wisely • We must protect it from pollution • We can find new ways to obtain fresh water • Ex. Desalination - process of removing salt from ocean water; expensive
