When and why did the Germans move to the USA? Many Germans left Europe (1683-1983) in hope of a better life in the USA. In this early period, German immigrants came from the states of Pfalz, Baden Württenberg, Hessen and the bishoprics (Bistümer) Osnabrück, Münster and Mainz.

Their jobs • German businesses such as the lager beer industry. • Very few German women had jobs in a factory or worked as clerks. • They also worked as bakers, domestic workers, hotel keepers, laundry workers, saloon keepers, tailors and nurses!
Religion • Most Germans immigrants were Protestants: perhaps a third of German immigrants were Catholics and around 250.000 were Jewish. • There were considerable problems with the Lutheran community in the USA, .
