Adaptive Optics Overview Summary of MOU Performance Requirements • MKIR recognizes that the 85 element system is state of the art and that performance is difficult to guarantee. NICI has been designed around the AO performance predicted by the Gemini modeling which is summarized in the table below. • Predicted performance of the 85 Element Curvature System • (Gemini Estimate, AO and atmosphere only, Telescope and Instrument not included, bright star, good seeing) Filter J H K L M Wavelength (microns) 1.25 1.65 2.2 3.8 4.8 Strehl 50 % 67 % 80 % 93 % 95 % • The system should be designed with these goals in mind and derived requirements should be consistent with these goals. Actual performance may be less but should in any case meet or exceed the performance of the Hokupaa 36 element system on Gemini North. • The deformable mirror curvature should be at least +- 16 meters per inner segment with a goal of +-12 meters.. • The system should operate at an adjustable open loop speed of up to 1Khz(requirement), 2 kHz(goal) • Scattered light is of great concern to NICI. The deformable mirror must be capable of a Strehl of 94% @632 nm as measured in the Zygo. To meet this requirement correctable modes can be removed as long as they do not represent a correction that would use more than 10% of the DM available stroke. • The membrane mirror should have a flatness of lambda/22 rms surface over the central 1.2mm in the visible when relaxed.
Adaptive Optics Overview • MKIR will • Build optical bench • Install and align optics • Deliver bench to IFA for integration of components and testing • Receive the working bench for integration with the cryostat • MKIR is responsible for any problems with the bench or optics
Adaptive Optics Overview • UH-IRTF 36 Element AO System • Uses all new components made at UH since the old AO group’s departure • Toomey Project Manager • First light May 19th 2002 • System is functional and undergoing tests
