K12 Scholar Selection Process • 5 new K12 Scholars (19 total, 2005-07) • New multi-stage selection process • Post-doctoral committee • Written application – review & score • Oral presentation by top ½ of applicants – rank, recommend top candidates • Education Committee – select Scholars • NCRR review and approval pending

  9. Principles of Clinical and Translational Research • Part 1 – What is clinical & translational research? Why is it important to you and your patients? How do you pursue a career in clinical research? • Part 2 – How do you pick a research question & design a research study? • Small group work – ‘Obesity in Puerto Rico’ • Research question • Testable hypothesis & specific aim • Part 3 – How do you protect research subjects? How do you report research results?

  10. Evaluation of Introductory Course by UPR Medical Students 66% reported prior research experience 62% (95% CI: 51%, 72%) agreed or strongly agreed: “As a consequence of this course, I am more likely to pursue additional training in clinical and translational research.”

Leverage Education Technology • Create an Online Certificate Program in Clinical and Translational Science • Phase I – developing first 4 required courses to be offered in Summer ’07 • Statistical Methods for Clinical Research I • Introduction to Clinical Epidemiology • Introduction to Clinical Research • Responsible Conduct of Research

  13. 4. Strengthen Infrastructure • Unified governance and administrative infrastructure across all five Mayo schools

Priorities for 2007 • Postdoctoral • Initiate “urban immersion” program in collaboration with Center for Minority Health at Univ. of Pittsburg • Develop additional courses • Develop career transition awards • Predoctoral • Develop PhD courses • Select and enroll University of Puerto Rico and Mayo Medical School in practical research experience

Priorities for 2007 • Leverage education technology • Compare outcomes in online vs. in-person introductory statistics course offered during Summer ‘07 • Develop Phase II of online certificate program – 2 additional required courses + selected electives for Summer ‘08 • Infrastructure • Implement evaluation plan
