CTSAPediatrics Steering Committee Kathleen A. Kennedy, MD, MPH
Integration of Pediatrics into CTSA • Historically strong representation of Pediatric faculty in GCRC Scientific Advisory Committee and prior K-30 CRCA Training Program • Pediatric faculty as leaders in 3 of the Key Components of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences • 1/4 CCTS pilot grants awarded to pediatrician (neonatologist) • 1/6 initial K-12 grants awarded to pediatrician (neurologist)
Challenges for Pediatric Research • Requirement of 75% dedicated time for research (in K grants) is unrealistic for small divisions and for “clinician” scientists • Availability and support for effective mentors • Ever-increasing regulatory and administrative barriers (even more restrictive in “vulnerable” pediatric patients) • Relatively rare diseases (as compared to adults) • Lack of critical mass to efficiently manage resources such as research nurses with experience in pediatrics
Goals for Pediatric Steering Committee • Promote flexibility in funding mechanisms to promote clinical research by a broader group of “clinician” scientists with appropriate skills and mentoring • Work at a national level to promote high-quality clinical research without unnecessary regulatory/administrative burdens
