English 11 Honors 11-8-13 Hawthorne’s Style of Writing
English 11 Honors • Good day! • Please have Ch. 17 & 18 homework out for me to check for completion. • We will be taking more notes on Hawthorne today. Obtain paper and a writing implement to transcribe. • Homework: For Monday, 11/11/13 – “Paper” take home test for the ending of The Scarlet Letter is due per guidelines given yesterday.
Scoring of “Paper” Test • Each response is worth 4 points. • Each response will be graded in the following manner: 2 points for cohesiveness in paragraph format (short answer construct - MLA); 2 points for content (connecting quotes from the whole novel to the response) • Evidence supplied has to be considerate of the novel as a whole – solely using quotes from the beginning or middle of the book, based only on discussion, will cause a dramatic loss in points.
Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Style of Writing • Complex Rhetorical Mode – DESCRIPTION • Involves the use of rhetorical strategies/devices to create vivid imagery • Figurative language, in particular symbols, allusions, metaphors, similes, concrete & abstract language, create the images meant to convey • Description is complex because it is difficult to achieve – conveying or evoking an image that touches at least one of the readers’ senses is particularly arduous in nature.
Description – objectivity/subjectivity • Objectivity is sometimes used in DESCRIPTION; however, it lends itself more to a report-like entry or scientific exactness in its report. • Subjectivity is more likely to be engaging to the reader in DESCRIPTION and is a permissible, if not preferred, rhetorical strategy to use in evoking emotion, sentiment, or transportation of the mind. • SUBJECTIVITY is NOT considered a fallacy in Hawthorne’s writing – fiction or nonfiction
