What the course is all about (nutshell version): • Interacting with American classics to better understand our past and the role of the author. • Articulate ideas, both written and orally, on issues connected to the literature and our own lives. • Essential Questions: How does humankind solve our moral dilemmas, like balancing self-interest with the good of the whole? What does it mean to be an American? What is the American Dream and how do we balance success and happiness? What is the role of the author?
Required Texts- Semester One: *Othello, Shakespeare *The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne *The Crucible, Miller * The Adventures of Huck Finn, Twain *Glencoe Anthology of American Lit (various readings) Semester Two: *Hamlet, Shakespeare *The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald *The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck *The Glass Menagerie, Williams *All My Sons, Miller *The Things They Carried, O’Brien
Class Policies: See syllabus for details Meeting deadlines is essential—No Late hwk will be accepted (unless ex absence)! Major assignments however (15pts or more) can be turned in late with a penalty of a letter grade per day Long term assignments must be submitted on their due date even if you are unable to attend class unless other arrangements have been made. If an assignment can’t be done, you must be responsible and notify me before the due date or the assignment will be late. Academic Integrity is an absolute must
