What is a Carbon Footprint? A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated through the direct or indirect operation of a business or organization (e.g. school). • SCOPE 3: • Can be harder to quantify • Indirect emissions generated off-premises (e.g. commuter travel) • SCOPE 1 and SCOPE 2: • Easiest to measure • Greatest potential $$ savings if reduced

An effective method to communicate the Board’s sustainability efforts using a concept that the public understands. EPS Scope 1 Emissions (Fuel + Energy Combustion) Scope 1 emissions… … are the largest component of EPS carbon footprint (over 50% of total emissions). … have remained largely unchanged over the past three years. … are closely linked to outside temperature, as the majority of Scope 1 emissions are consumption of natural gas for cooling/heating. *Buses only account for about 16% of EPS’ Scope 1 emissions.
EPS Scope 2 Emissions (Electricity) Scope 2 emissions… … are the second largest component of EPS carbon footprint (approx. 25% of total emissions). … have decreased by almost 16% over the past 3 years. Why the decrease? • Energy conservation and awareness efforts at EPS have increased. • Student enrolment has declined by about 15% over the past three years. Because much of Ontario’s electricity comes from fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), GHG are created in the generation of that power. These Scope 2 emissions are attributed to the electricity consumer.
EPS Scope 3 Emissions (Indirect Sources) Scope 3 emissions… … are the smallest component of EPS carbon footprint (approx. 18% of total emissions). Waste-related emissions will decrease significantly in the 2008-09 footprint due to an aggressive waste reduction campaign that has reduced EPS waste by almost 50%!
