I was wondering about identity… What does identity look like for a young person?
I found an interesting study that examined what teens think of themselves. They were asked to describe themselves using metaphors.
I was so impressed by what they said that I wanted to try this myself… With some slightly younger teens.
I was fascinated! This is what they said:
I am a Beach Ball. J. L.
I am a River. K. H.
I can find the easiest path through life and I am resilient.
I am a Wooden Door. M. D.
You can not see through me. I am not predictable.
But I can let certain people in and let them in completely. I choose the people I let through the door.
I am a Computer. C.M.
I am a Human Heart. K. H.
I am a Briefcase. C.M.
When you want to store your important secrets, I will hold them for you.
I am a Rose. M. D.
When I was a kid, I was kind of a troublesome bush of thorns, but as I grew…
I became something beautiful.
They all said something intriguing,, but it wasn’t what they said that made a difference. It was the sharing of these ideas that helped each of us learn something. Therefore, a great resource for discovering teens’ identity… Be Creative. Ask them.
