  2. New Graduation Requirements All NC students beginning with the Class of 2010 • In addition to course requirements • Complete Graduation Project • Pass five End of Course Tests • Algebra I • Biology • English I • Civics and Economics • US History

  3. Why have a graduation project? In 2006 the NC Department of Public Instruction mandated a graduation project for all NC schools. A committee of RCHS teachers developed a project according to state guidelines and will evaluate it based on state mandated rubrics. Beginning with the class of 2010 ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THIS PROJECT TO GRADUATE!

Our Approach • The graduation committee has developed a meaningful project we feel will help us meet our goal of graduating citizens of the world, graduates able to envision and create a better world. • This project will integrate some of the school’s most innovative programs including citizenship and flex. • Students will be asked to select a problem or issue that they care about, research it, and then to “do something” about that problem or issue.

  5. Our Approach “Graduate citizens of the world” • Meaningful experience – ask students to answer the question – “What will you do?” • Develop skills • Ties into citizenship, flex, interdisciplinary flex, and Project Citizen • Showcase student work

  7. Paper • This research paper on a problem or issue of interest to the student will be completed over two summers. • The 1st paper will be about the history of the problem or issue selected by the student. This will be completed the summer between the student’s sophomore and junior year. • In the 2nd paper, the student will study how others have responded to or addressed the problem or issue. It will also include the student’s proposal for addressing the problem or issue (the proposal for the project). This will be completed between the student’s junior and senior year. • Each paper must be at least 3 pages with MLA format for citations. DUE TO ADVISORS and to turnitin.com THE FIRST MONDAY OF SCHOOL

  8. Portfolio The portfolio will include: • Four Interdisciplinary Flex Reflections • Two citizenship reflections • Definition of Citizenship paper • Initial proposal for the project, 1-2 pages • Project log of work on the student’s product • Final Reflection on the project as a whole

  9. Four ID FLEX Reflections • one page each in length • will be completed in school after each ID flex. • students completed the first reflection last spring

  10. Citizenship Reflections • at least one page each in length • completed during school after the spring service days each year

  11. Definition of Citizenship Paper • assigned in English class this coming winter • completed as a homework assignment • will also count as an English grade • will help prepare students for 10th grade writing test

  12. Proposal for Project • At least 1-2 pages • Includes the issue or problem they want to study • Will be assigned this spring by the student’s advisor. • Due after Spring Break

  13. Reflection on the Project • How did it go? • will include reflections on the process as well as the project • completed senior year after project is completed • one to two pages in length

  14. Product • completed during their senior year • the implementation of their plan they developed over the summer • students may do a variety of things. For example: Make a website to help an organization Produce a video to train volunteers Create an organization Propose legislation

Presentation • Presentations will take place in the spring of the student’s senior year in a special extended advisory • will include a visual aid such as a power point presentation or presentation board • students will tell what they did and reflect on how it went • a panel of evaluators will evaluate all parts of the project according to state developed rubrics • The panel will include teachers, other faculty members and community members

  16. What’s next? Sophomore Year students will: • write the definition of citizenship paper • write ID Flex and citizenship service reflections • write a proposal for a topic • write the first research paper

  17. Junior Year Junior year students will: • write ID Flex and Citizenship service reflections • write the 2nd research paper and propose their project/product

  18. Senior Year Senior year students will: • write ID Flex reflections • complete the project/product and project log • present their work • write the final project reflection

  19. Your role as a parent or guardian • Keep an eye on your student’s progress….ASK QUESTIONS • Talk about possible topics • Encourage students to seek community contacts • Come see their presentations • Remember that this is a graduation requirement!
