  4. NRC History & Background • 1982 • 1995 • 41 programs • Delivery in large book form • Rankings • 2006 • 60 fields • Online database expected in 2007 • Greater emphasis on quantitative measures

How do doctoral programs need to respond? • Each program needs a primary contact for NRC communications • Encourage faculty to participate in faculty questionnaires • Review program questionnaire responses of Graduate College and complete remaining questions • Assist with identification of faculty • Notify students (in relevant units)

  6. What is the survey format? • Institutional questionnaire • Program questionnaire • Faculty questionnaire • Student questionnaire

  7. When does this happen? • See handout for relevant dates • Department-specific dates in bold • Most of the work in summer & fall of 2006

  8. 1.Institutional Questionnaire To be completed by the Graduate College • Health benefits • Collective bargaining • Completion data by race/ethnicity for broad fields: • Life sciences • Physical sciences & mathematics • Engineering • Social sciences • Arts & humanities

  9. 2. Program Questionnaire To be completed jointly by the Graduate College and each doctoral program • Graduate College will complete pre-filled template and background information to help facilitate completion by programs (September) • Units return to Graduate College in October

Program Questionnaire: content • Areas of research emphasis within a field • Faculty list and demographics • Doctoral students • Enrollment counts and demographics • Admission and new enrollments • Time to degree, completion and attrition • Funding/financial support levels and mechanisms • GRE scores • Support and services • Postdocs—numbers and demographics

  11. How do we identify faculty members for participation? • Preliminary list compiled in Graduate College from academic appointment data • Departments confirm and add/subtract names • Lists sent to departments for verification (June) • Names due back from programs to Graduate College in July

  12. What are the fields identified for participation in the NRC survey? • NRC taxonomy/UIUC programs (handouts) • We are in the process of mapping NRC fields to Illinois programs • Sometimes this is easy! • Sometimes this is more difficult and will require close communication with departments.

  13. 3.Faculty Questionnaire To be completed by faculty • NRC asks ALL graduate faculty in eligible fields to complete electronic surveys about their participation in graduate education • Surveys are due to NRC by October 2006 • NRC expects near-100% response

  15. 4. Student Questionnaire To be completed by admitted-to-candidacy students only, in a small number of fields • New, pilot part of this year’s study • Only for 5 fields: • Chemical Engineering • Economics • English • Microbiology • Physics • Electronic survey • Due October 2006
