A Rational Procedure for development of traffic distribution factors Harikishan Perugu, PTP Transportation Engineer/Planner OKI Regional Council of Governments Cincinnati, OH
Background • Traffic distribution factors are percentages of daily traffic • Hourly distribution factors • Time of day factors • Truck factors • Used for • Model Validation • Post Processing • Energy consumption • User Cost analysis • Highway Congestion • Emissions
Procedure • Collect Data • Detailed traffic counts (lots of locations!!) • Land use data • Highway network data • Process Data • Convert to same format • Calculate • AM peak direction percentages • Time of day factors • Truck percentages • Stratify counts based on area type, functional class • Plotting the graphs
Procedure (Continued) • Analysis of Patterns • Manually stratify based on land use (used GIS) • Analyze average hourly factors • Analyze average truck factors • Statistical analysis for confidence interval (t-statistic)
Conclusion • Major factors affecting hourly distribution • Land use (Retail, industrial, residential), roadway functional class • Land use mix is manual process • Major factors affecting truck distribution • Land Use (Industrial Vs Non Industrial) • Freeway Vs Non freeway • GIS information yielded better factors • Not Similar to State wide factors
