  3. Public Service Communications • Part of the mission of amateur radio under Part 97 rules • “Special Events” • These events are not exclusive to ARES • As volunteers we represent ham radio • Learn skills that apply to emcomm • It’s a hobby…have some fun!

  4. Served Agencies/Entities • May be public or private • When no other comm service is available • Develop relationship with event sponsors and organizers • Identify their needs for their event • Educate them on communication issues • Draft a plan that meets their needs and review it with them

  5. Communication Plans • Design plan by first defining its Goals, then select • Objectives • Strategies • Tactics • Pre-event briefing

  6. Net Operations • Directed net • Net Control Station (NCS) • Net traffic • Formal • Informal - tactical • Net protocol • Net practices/net discipline • Best practices on the air

  7. Equipment and Supplies • Your needs will always depend on your assignment • Go-kits • Radios • Practice, practice, practice • Other items

  8. The Actual Event • Be on time and familiar with the comms plan • Situational awareness and personal safety • Dealing with event staff • Additional duties • Other tips

  9. After Action Reports • Important tool for the realistic assessment of our plans and operations • After Action Review • Post-event debriefing • Written comments • Review of draft AAR • Comments on the event itself
