  1. Mr. A • Great big love letter to man • We should accept everyone because we are all God’s children • Despite truth, feels that God cannot condemn billions of souls to eternal torment

Mr. B • Doesn’t consider during the week that he is a child of God • Doesn’t care too much about attendance as long as he makes it Sunday AM • Is indifferent during worship service • Has more important things to do rather than attending Gospel meetings • Never invites people to church or Bible study

  3. Religious Emotion Mr. A Mr. B Has over-abundance Has under-abundance

  4. Emotionalism Excessive displays of joy, sorrow, love, etc. Where do we see it? Some denom., “liberal” churches of Christ Allowing emotions to override Scripture New-Hermeneutic, Institutionalism, Instrumental music, Unity in diversity

  5. Can lead us to tolerate sin b/c of friend or family ties Can lead us to compromise to avoid being disliked Tolerance of homosexuality? Rom. 12:21-32 Teaching on kingdom – Acts 8:12, 28:23, 31 Why is emotionalism dangerous? Lack of church discipline? I Cor. 5 Can lead us to compromise b/c of desire to be happy Can lead us to compromise God’s plan of salvation Redefining or denial of MDR? Mt. 19:9

Emotionalism Apathy Excessive displays of joy, sorrow, love, etc. Allowing emotions to override Scripture New-Hermeneutic, Institutionalism, Instrumental music, Unity in diversity Lack or suppression of emotion; lack of interest Some brethren that appear uninterested or indifferent to worship, Bible study, etc. Going through motions

  7. Can result in a lack of attendance Heb. 10:25 Can result in prayers to lack meaning Jas. 5:17 Can result in our singing not fulfilling command Eph. 5:19 Why is apathy dangerous? Can result in an improper mind when partaking of Lord’s Supper I Cor. 11:26ff Can result in an indifferent mindset toward lost souls Mt. 9:36 Can result in a lack of care and concern for brethren Acts 20:36-38

Religious emotion – where should we be? • Mr. A & B • Realize that emotion is ruled by Scripture, not Scripture ruled by emotion • They realize that the truth of God’s word must not be compromised • They realize that emotion is a necessary element of service to God • Therefore they will be concerned about brethren and lost souls, be willing to teach salvation, be willing to hold fast the truth
