  1. Nobel ForumThe Road to Stockholm: A Nobel Mission Louis J. Ignarro, Ph.D. UCLA School of Medicine Molecular & Medical Pharmacology

  2. Nobel ForumFuture of Science & Technology • Purpose: • To help generate motivation and drive for Koreans in academics to pursue a level of excellence in the Science & Technology. • To help develop excellent and productive research programs. • To address novel and urgent research needs in the Science & Technology. • Global Collaborative Research & Innovation of Higher Education.

  3. Motivation and Drive • High motivation, drive and perseverance are necessary in order to achieve success. • However, this requires exceptionally good education and training. • Prior to this, motivation and guidance by family members and friends can help.

  4. Role of the Institution or University • Essential to have a total commitment and devotion to promoting supreme excellence in education and training. • Excellence in Leadership at multiple levels is required. • Leadership at the government level. • Leadership at the academic level.

  5. Unique Position of the Institution or University • It is essential that the academic institution always understands that it is in a unique position to create the environment and resources to foster excellence among its faculty and students.

  6. Environment for Creating Excellence in Basic Research • The institution must work together with the faculty and students to encourage them to make important discoveries. • Research in Science & Technology demands time, effort and funds. • All resources must be made readily available in order to achieve success.

  7. Environment for Creating Excellence in Basic Research • The institution must make it as easy and enjoyable as possible for the faculty to conduct original discovery research. • The time for faculty should be devoted to education, training and basic research. • The institution must assist faculty in raising funds to support basic research.

  8. Environment for Creating Excellence in Basic Research • Who should provide the funds to the faculty to support basic research? • National government agencies budgeted to support basic Science & Technology research. • Collaborative arrangements with large industrial organizations. • Philanthropy.

  9. Environment for Creating Excellence in Basic Research • Who should provide the funds to the faculty to support basic research? • National government agencies budgeted to support basic research.

  10. Environment for Creating Excellence in Basic Research • National government agencies budgeted to support basic research.

  11. Environment for Creating Excellence in Basic Research • National government agencies budgeted to support basic research. • The quality and quantity and success of the basic research will be directly proportional to the funding programs made available to the institution and faculty. • FUNDING is the KEY.

  13. Unique or Novel Therapeutic Strategies • Gene therapy or modification of gene function. • Purpose- to restore normal function to diseased tissues and organs. • Possibly to prevent onset of genetic or inherited diseases. • Requires better understanding of gene function and organ physiology.

  14. Unique or Novel Therapeutic Strategies • Stem cell and cloning technology. • Purpose- to restore normal function to diseased tissues and organs. • To prevent onset of genetic or inherited diseases. • Research progress is good but more basic research is required.

  15. Unique or Novel Therapeutic Strategies • Conventional basic discovery research. • This proven approach has led to all of the current advances in biomedical research. • Development of novel and effective drugs to prevent, treat and cure disease. • This approach may appear to be old fashioned to some but is very effective.

  16. Unique or Novel Therapeutic Strategies • Taking advantage of naturally occurring dietary substances. • Examples: antioxidants and amino acids. • Proven success in animal models and humans. • More basic research in this field is warranted and strongly encouraged. • This approach is not regarded as worthy by the pharmaceutical industry, but that opinion should be ignored.

  17. Conclusions • Multiple approaches are available to develop novel therapeutic strategies. • Success will require excellence in basic and applied research. • Excellence in research will require strong and effective leadership and adequate funding programs.
