Elementary Student’s Descriptions of a “Good Teacher” The Purpose of this study is to determine if elementary students in grades kindergarten through second grade have consistent criteria to define a “good teacher”. Through this study I hope to provide teachers with an insight to their students and information that will help them to become more effective.

Methods First I will send invitation/consent forms to two classes each of kindergarten through second grade classes. The invitation/consents will be numbered. The participants will be chosen by random assignment. The participants will be a systematic sampling because I will choose every third number on the returned invitation/consent forms. The interviews will take place during the school day at a time that has been deemed appropriate by the classroom teacher. The interview will take place in a classroom. I will ask the interview questions. I will scribe the participant’s responses to the interview questions. The data will be analyzed for trends to look for consistent remarks.
Questions on the Interview What do you think a good teacher is? Why do you think this is important? What do you expect from teachers? What advice would you give to new teachers?
Conclusion I hope to find useful information that can help teachers understand their students better. I found lots of studies involving older students and college students, but not younger elementary students. I am hoping I can get more from the students than “nice”. I would like to do more research to compare how teachers would answer the same questions I would like to do more research to see if the answers have anything to do with gender , or race of the students and of their teachers.
