GEOSS Work Plan task management in ADC Ivan Petiteville, CEOS GEO ADC Co-Chairs Meeting, Tokyo, Japan, 14-15 May 2007 Slide # 1
Facts (1/2) • In the last 6-8 months, the GEO Tasks have, in general, progressed significantly. • Still a few GEO tasks teams could be more productive / efficient even if contribution is made on a best effort basis • Some possible reasons: • absence of strong Leads with adequate resources, • lack of resources in general, • POC having difficulties to drive the Task Team • subject not fashionable or badly defined, • no contractual means for the GEO SEC to make pressure on Task Teams Slide # 2
Facts (2/2) • As reported in the Task Force draft report, several successful projects related to GEO are on-going at regional or national level independently of the GEO WP. Slide # 3
Possible ways to explore … Example of actions that are difficult to implement: • Replace the POC (very delicate: • POC work on good will basis, • POC not responsible for the performance of Task Team actors; • Difficulty to measure the efficiency of a POC • potential negative reaction at political level, .. • Nominate every month the POC of the month (as the Toys’R’Us employee of the month) Slide # 4
G OSS POC of the Month E Slide # 5
Possible ways to explore (1/2) Possible actions to improve the efficiency of the Task Teams: • Send once a year a questionnaire to: • all POCs asking them if they are still willing to lead their respective Task (if not to propose a replacement) • Same with the Task Teams Leads and Contributors • Sherpas to send regular reminders to POCs for regular reporting. Sherpa should be more active and contact more the POCs more frequently. • Invite POCs to ADC meeting (should the meeting be more sexy e.g. • combine the meeting with a workshop organized by the host with external speakers working on projects of interest for GEO ?) • Combine the meeting with another interesting venue. Slide # 6
Possible ways to explore (2/2) Possible actions to improve the efficiency of the Task Teams (cont’): • Regroup tasks together (problem: long process, heavier burden on new merged Task). Experimented successfully on GEP 2007-2009 WP • Eliminate Tasks with no visible progress / interest (e.g. no candidate for POC) • Attract motivated people working on regional / national projects to join a GEO Team possibly bringing their projects as a contribution in one of the existing Task Slide # 7
