Detailed analysis of observation options for improved all-sky coverage and enhanced exposure of the Galactic Center. Evaluation of different pointing directions and update frequencies to optimize observation efficiency and uniformity.
E N D
Last time we met, we discussed option1 and option 2, which are a mix of pointed mode and survey mode observations Improved coverage of galactic center, but loss of all-sky coverage at short timescales. Option 3, 4, 5 restore all-sky coverage on 2 orbit timescales, give better all-sky uniformity while maintaining improved coverage of galactic center Achieve this by choosing pointing direction on orbit equator and update weekly or daily. Observation Strategy Update Option 1 Option 2
Options 3, 4, 5 3 4 Survey 5
More quantitatively • Option 5 is the most uniform
Observing efficiency • Observation efficiency is decreased when the LAT FoV is occulted by the Earth
Minimum exposure • Reasonable coverage on entire sky for option 3, 4 and 5
Galactic Center Exposure • Options 3, 4 and 5 all show similar coverage on Galactic Center
Observatory technical studies • Thermal studies • Make sure that nothing gets too hot or two cold • Slew times per orbit • Can’t easily schedule data downlinks during periods of high slew • Reaction wheel studies • Simulations to evaluate impact on reaction wheels, look at mitigations if needed.
