COMESA FACTS • 19 Member States, • Combined area of about 12 million square kms. • Population of 445 million • Combined GDP -510 billion • Annual import bill - US$155 billion and an export bill of US$108 billion(2012) • Tripartite arrangement with EAC, SADC to a grand FTA
COMESA AGRICULTURE SECTOR OBJECTIVES COMESA Treaty (1994) calls for: • a common agricultural policy, • regional food security, • an increase in productivity of crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry, • replacement of imports on regional basis, • achieve regional integration.
FOOD SECURITY SITUATION • In 2012, most ESA member states registered between 4 and 30 percent reductions in cereal production due to erratic rainfall conditions. The picture for 2013 is similar with most areas still affected by water stress, diseases, among others • According to FAO 2013, about 10 out of 19 Member States of COMESA will require external assistance for food. These include:- Malawi, Zimbabwe, Djibouti, Eritrea, Burundi, DRC, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Sudan and South Sudan
FOOD SECURITY SITUATION • As a result of the reductions in food production in 2012, more than 21 million people in the ESA region were facing various levels of food insecurity; • Food import requirements (Mostly grain) for the ESA region in 2012 remained stubbornly high, that is, around 42 million metric tones, of which over 2 million tones, is food aid;
