  5. Background of John’s Gospel • Meant for Jewish-Christians who were expelled from synagogues after the Roman Revolt. • Also written for the Ephesians • Written to strengthen faith and to win converts. • Very symbolic

More Background • The Gospel of John differs from the synoptic Gospels in many ways • In the synoptic Gospels: • Jesus emphasizes the Kingdom of God • Jesus teaches through parables • The Holy Spirit is barely mentioned • In the Gospel of John: • Jesus emphasizes his relationships with God and each one of us • Jesus teaches through miracles • The Holy Spirit is mentioned several times

Purposes of John’s Gospel • To stop the spread of false ideas about Jesus’ full humanity or full divinity. • To oppose the followers of John the Baptist who believed that John was the Messiah. • Emphasizes John’s inferiority to Jesus • To convince others that through believing in Jesus, they would be granted eternal life within him. • Highlights Jesus’ divinity

Symbolism • In John’s Gospel, Jesus symbolizes certain ideas/ objects based on his miracles • Light (Restoring of Sight 9:1) • Bread of Life (Feeding of 5000 6:1) • The Way, the Truth, and the Life (Walking on Water 6:15) • Life Living Water (Water to Wine 2:1) • True Vine (Catching of Fish 21:6-8)

  15. About the author • Most scholars consider John the apostle to be the author • Probably born between 10 – 15 A.D. in Galilee • Son of Zebedee • Gospels suggest his family was wealthy • Also wrote three of the letters in the Bible • Also wrote the book of Revelations

  16. How does John see Jesus? • Portrays Jesus’ divinity very clearly • Echoes Yahweh’s statements from the Old Testament • “I am” • Scholars doubt that the historical Jesus actually made these claims • Jesus claims he is the Son of God in the Gospel of John

  18. Light used as a symbol in the Gospel of John • John uses light as a symbol because of its’ necessity in everyday life • Crops needed sunlight to grow • Brought a sense of security • As a result, light is used as a metaphor for life

How does John use light as a symbol • Compares it with darkness • Essentially giving the reader two choices • Choosing light and being able to see • Choosing darkness and becoming lost • Also used to describe to process of coming to believe in Jesus • Starts in the dark, gradually moving towards the light

  20. Quote From the Gospel of John “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” -John 1:1

  21. What does it mean? • Word- refers to Jesus • In the beginning- alludes to Genesis and the creation story • And the word was God- describes the Word (Jesus) as being indistinguishable from God
