  1. User Centered Learning Design Ranvir Bahl (PMP, CSM)

  2. About Me • Work as Business Analyst II within Educational Technology unit of MedIT, UBC (Faculty of Medicine) • Roles • Instructional designer • Business analyst • Project manager • Solution Architect • Technical Analyst

  3. Key Takeaways • Common definition of usability (What, Why) • Tool to measure usability (How) • Tips on User Centred Design • Examples

  4. How do we define Usability ? “the extent to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a specified context of use” - ISO 9241 – 11

  5. Usability : Don’t make me think “…making sure that something works well that a person of average (or below average) ability and experience can use the thing… for it’s intended purpose without getting hopelessly frustrated” - Steve Krug, author if Don’t Make Me Think

  6. Define usability and UX goals • Learnability (first time users) • Efficiency (experienced users) • Memorability (casual users) • Error-Resistance (all users) (Source: Paul Hibbits, Usability Expert)

  7. Can usability be measured? Common metrics of usability: • Effectiveness: Being able to successfully complete a specific learning activity • Efficiency: Amount of time and effort spent in order to complete a learning activity • Satisfaction: Overall learning experience • Engaging • Error Tolerant • Easy to Learn

  8. System Usability Scale The SUS is a 10 item questionnaire with 5 response options • I think that I would like to use this system frequently. • I found the system unnecessarily complex. • I thought the system was easy to use. • I think that I would need the support of a technical person to be able to use this system. • I found the various functions in this system were well integrated. • I thought there was too much inconsistency in this system. • I would imagine that most people would learn to use this system very quickly. • I found the system very cumbersome to use. • I felt very confident using the system. • I needed to learn a lot of things before I could get going with this system.

  9. Scoring SUS and Interpretation • For odd items: subtract one from the user response. • For even-numbered items: subtract the user responses from 5 • This scales all values from 0 to 4 (with 4 being the most positive response). • Add up the converted responses for each user and multiply that total by 2.5. This converts the range of possible values from 0 to 100 instead of from 0 to 40. 150 page Detailed Report - Jeff Sauro, Measurability Usability LLC

  10. Tips for User Centred Design • Focus on learner’s needs, tasks and goals • Invest in initial research and requirements • Identify your target audience and observe them • Let learners define UX design requirements • Iterative design process • Observe target users using the system (Source: Elizabeth Snowdon, Usability Expert)

  11. Examples • MEDICOL – BB Connect instance of FoM • Information Layout • Reduce tunneling and #clicks to get to information • Intuitive, easy navigation • Pull out frequently used information • Mobile friendly interface through WP Touch plug-in for Wordpress • Mobile friendly web-app using CSS

  12. WP Touch Pro • Plug-in for Word Press; Free and Paid version
