What is it? • Late 1500s to early 1600s • It was a period of Russian history that contains the death of the last Rurik Dynasty Tsar, Feodor Ivanovich, and the Romanov Dynasty. • It was as a time where starvation killed about one-third of the population. • Russia suffered from many civil uprisings and impostors.
Causes • After Ivan’s deficient son, Feodor, died it ended the hereditary dynastic line of Rurik. • Boris Godunov, former regent, was elected successor. • The state weakened forcing Russia into a period of disorder and Polish invasion. • Peasants were uprising due to extreme starvation.
False Dmitri • Later a man calling himself Dmitri claimed to be the heir to the throne, appeared in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. • Dmitri had been stabbed to death before his brother Feodor’s death, supposedly by Godunov’s order. • The strange individual who was impersonating him was regarded as the rightful heir by many of the people. • He attracted support both in Russia and outside its borders. • Russians soon found out of his impersonation. They cut him into pieces and shot the remains from a cannon towards Poland.
Polish-Muscovite War • After the false Dmitri a civil war followed. • VasiliiShuiskii was declared Tsar, but he was unpopular in Russia. • Many of Dmitry’s supporters were Polish and their massacre in 1606 triggered the Polish joining in the civil war. • The Polish invaved Russia and took over Moscow. That same year people became anti-Polish in Russia. • The Poles were forced to leave from most of Russia. • After more complications both sides were finally ready for a truce.
Outcome • Russian nationalism comes out on top over the Polish nationalism • Aristocracy is won out over the peasants • Authorities became under control of the chaos
