  2. Rationale • Construction trades use rules and rulers for measurement. • Standard Rulers are divided into quarters, eighths, and sixteenths. • Precision measurement is the standard for quality work.

  3. Objectives • Place Fractions on a Number Line • Read a Ruler with halves, fourths, eighths, and sixteenths

  4. Agenda • Make a Number Line • Reading a Ruler and Practice • Ruler Internet Activities

  5. Creating a Fractional Number Line • Demonstration – using card strips and markers • Group Practice • Individual Practice

  6. Fractions on a Number Line Draw a number line and place these fractions between 0 and 1: • ½ and 2/2 • ¼ and ¾ • 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 • 1/16, 3/16, 5/16, 7/16, 9/16, 11/16, 13/16, and 15/16 Make it large enough for you to work with and you may use color markers.

  7. Number Line Discussion Questions • Do any of the fractions fall on the same place on the number line? Explain your answer? • Where would fractions like: 2/4, 2/8, 6/8, 4/16, or 6/16 fall on the number line? How do we explain this? • What happens to fractions that fall beyond 1 on the number line? Beyond 2? • How many fractions are there on the number line? • Can all the fractions fit on the number line?

  10. Split into Two Groups • Jigsaw Group • Computer Group • Work on your assignments for 15 minutes and then we will switch groups for the next 15 minutes.

  11. How to Read a Ruler Jigsaw • Each group will have copies of a 4 different articles. • Each person chooses one of the 4 articles to read. • Share what you read with the group and do the example problems with the rulers. • Complete Practical Problems Worksheet, correct, and review errors.

  13. Ruler Game • Finish the Tutorial/practice and handout Practice Sheets. • Click on the Ruler Game at the bottom of the screen. • Play the game until directed to stop.
