  1. INFN GEM Front Tracker V. Bellini, M. Capogni, E. Cisbani,S. Colilli, F. Giuliani, M. Gricia,F. Librizzi, M. Lucentini, F. Mammoliti,F. Noto, S. Minutoli, P. Musico,R. Perrino, F. Santavenere ... INFN / Bari-Lecce, Catania, Genova, Roma-Sanità SBS Collaboration Meeting Oct 18-19 2012 JLab Readout Electronics development will be presented by Paolo Musico E. Cisbani

  2. Front Chamber reqs and design • Hit spatial resolution ~ 70 mm • Stand large background (g ~ 250 MHz/cm2, e/p 160 kHz/cm2) • Transverse area at least 40x120 cm2 • Event rate at the level of 20 kevents/s • Reuse in different configurations E. Cisbani

  3. GEM base module 40x50 cm2 • Large GEM module with small dead area • Low material budget/Light Structure • Modular design • Flexible configuration • Balanced weight • Segmented HVs and individual protection resistors • Spacers to keep gap • Thin PERMAGLAS frame E. Cisbani

  4. Service Frame / Detail • External service frame made of smaller segments in carbon fiber • Rigid structure, can correct small GEM module bending • Prototyping under production E. Cisbani

  5. Beam test @ DESY / Full Module Size 40x50 cm2 E. Cisbani DGEM = 400, 390, 350 V 3 mm drift gap Ar:CO2 70:30 4 GeV electron ionization: 28 pairs Gain: 17600  charge: 500 ke / 2000 ADC ch

  6. Parassitic beam test of new electronics/Jul-Aug 2012 E. Cisbani

  7. 2012/CERN Test – Event display HV=3750 V Signal > 1000 RMS ~ 50 Event Strip Plane E. Cisbani

  8. 2012/CERN Test – Signal development Signal saturated, and wrong clock phase both fixed However, position information are available E. Cisbani

  9. Calibration pulse development Left: normal signal Bottom: «saturated» «Saturation» depends on the baseline level E. Cisbani

  10. Gas Component / Radiation test We would like to use differential pressure transmitters at gas inlet and outlet to evaluate pressure drop in the chamber and any potential problem Negative Rad Hard Test E. Cisbani

  11. HV divider and Spark counter In lab test we use LNF/GEM-HV module with 7 independent HV levels and current feedback. In operation we intend to use a voltage divider (based on Olympus/Abruzzio design); Working on asimple sparkcounter based onstandard preamcomponents(CREMAT CR110) +some standardmodules CREMAT amp. is probably not RAD HARD E. Cisbani

  12. DAQ Software • Implemented on C++ • Run on Linux • MPD as independent library • One configuration file (text format) • Use open source libconfig++ • Self consistent output binary raw data E. Cisbani Still some work on event readout library Tested on 3 VME platforms (Struck, CAEN USB and Optical) bug fixed: clock phase was not set properly.

  13. Catania Tools for assembling / READY to go Clean room with gas system HV probe box and accessories GEM foil Stretcher Fiducial pin extractors Consumables ... E. Cisbani

  14. Catania Assembling Test and Training Used spare/damaged parts of the previous design to get experience in gluing/assembling gems modules (2 dummy modules assembled) E. Cisbani

  15. Material for 6 chambers (18 GEM modules) We have to put a large foils production order before end of Italian fiscal year, production can be delayed some months (if needed) – in addition to the CERN «natural» delay We still have some margin for improvements, which will be considered after assembling and characterization E. Cisbani

  16. GEM Chamber: Assembling of the first 40x50 cm2 module will start the 22° of October (due to people previous committments) Assembling expected to last 2 full weeks (at least) characterize the module in lab (with rad. Sources) Mechanics: Service frame prototype in production Test service frame on three modules (first proto, training module and first final module) Test November: Chance to access the RD51 test beam (second week of November)or RICH-CLAS12 at the end of November – most likely Electronics  Paolo Talk Short term plan E. Cisbani Expected to go into «mass» assembling early next year
