  2. Outline • Introduction and objectives of the meeting • News on LHC, CMS and Tracker • News on Upgrade • Status and Plan for Pixel upgrade G.M. Bilei

  3. Introduction 2012 very important year with potential for discoveries. Aiming to accumulate 15-20 fb-1to discover or to rule out light mass Higgs. INFN CMS must continue play a strong role in Physics INFN TK Consortium must continue to support strongly Tracker activities in all areas: Operations, DPG and POG (tracking and b-tagging) In addition key Italian people (Ettore, Lino, Andrea and Giacomo) are in charge in these areas, we need to support well these activities. 2012 also very important year to prepare the activities for Long Shutdown 1 INFN consortium should continue to support Maintenance of the Tracker and continue to play a key role in supporting maintenance of Systems like Cooling, Power Supply, Safety and Environmental. 2012 also key year for the definition of the Pixel upgrade activities TDR for Pixel Upgrade in progress. INFN consortium play a strong role with the construction and integration of Pixel detector and future developments G.M. Bilei

  4. Objectives of the meeting Review the global activities in several areas and our impact on them - Operation and Maintenance, DPG,POG - Pixel upgrade - Tracker upgrade Review the general plans and in particular - Discuss INFN plans, commitments and future interests - Resources (human and finance) to support present and future activities Identify issues and problems that need to be brought up to Tracker central Management and to CMS Meet with INFN Institute leaders and discuss resources, GRI requests, pending points, long term future developments and strategies, PRIN experience, etc. G.M. Bilei

  5. Agenda G.M. Bilei

  6. News on LHC LHC beam operation started about 10 days ago Beams circulating at 4 TeV 50 ns bunch spacing, aiming at integrated of luminosity 15-19 fb-1 This week we should get first collisions No show stoppers for the time being Detailed machine plan and other useful info available at the LHC Programme Coordination page http://lpc.web.cern.ch/lpc/ G.M. Bilei

  7. News on CMS and the Tracker CMS and the Tracker successfully completed the program during the last Xmas XTS. Successful participation to MWGRs A good sample of cosmics data were taken in the past weeks. About 0.8 M cosmics with Magnet OFF and about 0.8 M cosmics with magnet ON Strips HV scan and DCU calibration done. Pixel detector fully recalibrated at zero deg C (instead of +7.4 deg ) Few and minor problems in Strips Tracker still remain to be understood S/N a bit lower Some FED problems Pixel and Strips detectors and CMS are well ready for collisions CMS collision plan at this link https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/viewauth/CMS/CollisionsMar2012 G.M. Bilei

  8. Executive summary on Upgrades • Pixel Upgrade • Visible progress on all fronts • Pixel TDR is in preparation - could go a bit faster but still in time • CDR Review foreseen for 25th of April during TK week. • Tracker Upgrade • Progress on many fronts • Silicon Sensor evaluation is progressing well • Extensive Workshop on modules last Tracker week: • module is mainly understood – prototyping planned • Need to increase focus and resources on Track Trigger G.M. Bilei

  9. Some news on Pixel Upgrade • ROC Submission should be back end of April 2012 • Test Beam periods foresee 1st week of July 2012 and 2nd week of October 2012 • TDR • - Good progress in write up • - Timeline (see next slide): first version to be sent to LHCC referee in June - INFN Gruppo I presentation on Pixel TDR planned on 16-17 July • Draft contribution from agencies presented last Oct. RRB • - Revision of Cost ongoing ~ 18.1 MCHF (covered with Finland and France) • INFN pixel contribution 1.4 MCHF • Sharing of Responsibilities and funding • - Salvatore leading the discussion (well advanced) with the Pixel MB • Next month will be critical with several key technical and managerial discussions to take place G.M. Bilei

  10. Pixel TDR progress • Target presentation of final document to LHCC in September 2012 • with draft sent 1-2 months earlier. • Presently we have first draft of ~70% • Accessible via Tracker main web page following link to Phase 1, then TDR • Still several key contributions and strategic points to be worked into the document. • Will review in April all key strategic and technical parts of the project going in the TDR as part of CMS Conceptual Design Review (Apr. 25th) G.M. Bilei

  11. Pixel Upgrade draft current plan G.M. Bilei

  12. 2012 Pixel Upgrade objectives • Establish and test the full INFN production chain by September • Aim to assemble few modules with old parts to qualify Selex (limited so far by • 10 HDI available) by Sep. 2012 • Test Beam: Need to actively participate to the TB (and its preparation) with • new ROC planned in 2012. • Can use an opportunity in Frascati Test Beam facility to test old and new • modules • Phase1b: need to produce one paragraph for the TDR. • Need to discuss sharing of activities among interested groups • Need thinking on trigger capabilities • Consolidate the project with the rest of the community. G.M. Bilei

  13. General status • INFN activities are progressing quite. • - See next reports by each single center • Visible progress is ongoing in several areas and all centers • - Mechanical tooling in Bari • - Probe cards design and contact with Selex in Pisa • - HDI test setup in Catania • - Cold box manufacturing and Xray test in Perugia • - Probe test station for testing ROC after cutting in Padova • Possibility of Test Beam in Frascati beginning of May • - Aim to test one Pixel module to increase our knowledge of the system • - Collective, but small effort among INFN Institutes interested • - Should start discussing and if it is of interest, draft a working plan G.M. Bilei

  14. Old parts situation • Sensors ordered by PSI at CIS – Delivery in few weeks • 15 good wafers will be delivered at CERN. Tested in Pisa • Bad sensors used for start qualifying Selex • Cost 11.000 euro from our 50.000 euro allocated by INFN in 2011 • Old ROC available in PSI for INFN – agreement for 2 wafers • Test will be done at PSI by Padova group and later repeated in Padova • No cost for ROCs but to be foreseen for dicing. • Old TBM available from FPIX community • Available in Catania • No cost for TBMs • Old HDI recovered (~ 10)and available in Catania and Bari • Probe cards delivered • Globally we are on a good path. Much more details in later presentations. • We spent well the money assigned by Gruppo I in 2011 (50Ke) and the time G.M. Bilei

  15. Phase 1b developments • Design of new readout chip with objectives: • able to sustain Phase II high rate (5x1034)with reduced data losses, with smaller • pitch and lower thresholds and possibly triggering ability to be ready in about • 5 years time scale. • Priority now is to consolidate with consensus a road map for this project • Write down a good paragraph for the TDR • Need to continue to work on simulation to optimize pixel size. Identify someone to work with Alessiaand Morris. • Established a working team of Physicist and Engineers (INFN/US+KIT?) • Continue to hold regular meetings with FNAL. But we need to change gear • and become more effective in order to allow engineers to start working • effectively together. • A Broad brush plan – next 2 years was sketched and discussed. We need to follow up G.M. Bilei 15

  16. Executive Summary Pixel Upgrade We are doing quite good progress since we were financed by INFN GRI last May Involved groups are working along the established plan We have a plan and resources allocated for 2012 A successful Test Beam was made last December in Frascati Possibility to held one additional TB beginning of May Our main objective for 2012 is to build first modules with old and possibly new parts and to qualify the centers. Actively participate to the TDR and the future development G.M. Bilei
