Manifest Destiny • The belief that it was America’s God-given destiny to expand westward until it reached the Pacific Ocean.
The End of the Revolutionary War, 1783 • After the Revolutionary War, the Treaty of Paris gave all British land east of the Mississippi River to America. • EXCEPT for Florida, which was a Spanish colony.
The Louisiana Purchase, 1803 • President Thomas Jefferson bought it in 1803 from France. • That is about three cents per acre! • The largest land purchase in American History. • It doubled the size of the United States.
Florida Cession, 1819 • Given to the U.S. as a part of the Adams-Onis Treaty in 1819. • President Andrew Jackson had the U.S. Army waiting in Georgia by the Florida border ready to invade if they had to. • Spain realized that they would be unable to keep Florida if the U.S. attacked. • They didn’t really want it anyways.
Texas Annexed, 1845 • Mexico wanted Americans to come to Texas to help settle it and build plantations. • Soon, Americans outnumbered Mexicans ten to one. • Texas wanted to be independent, Mexico refused. • They went to war, and Texas became independent in 1836. • In 1845 the United States annexed Texas as the 28th state.
Oregon Country, 1846 • Russia, France, England, and America all claimed the Oregon Territory. • Russia and France gave up their claims. • England negotiated the boundary at the 49th parallel. (Canada was an English colony.)
Mexican Cession, 1848 • Tensions between Mexico and America were high ever since America annexed Texas. • President Polk sent troops into Mexico, and when Mexican army attacked them, he declared war on Mexico. • The stronger American army soundly defeated the Mexican Army. • America paid Mexico 15 million dollars for their loss.
Gadsen Purchase, 1853 • America realized how important this land was for railroads. • America paid Mexico 10 million dollars for it. • We paid this much because we felt guilty over Texas and the Mexican War.
