California Data Exchange Center Hydrologic Database System webmaster@flood.water.ca.gov http://cdec.water.ca.gov http://cdec4gov.water.ca.gov
Objectives • Collect and disseminate hydrologic and weather information • Provide a centralized database for user access • Provide an early flood warning system
Basic Uses of Database • Early flood warning system • Monitoring river levels • Water supply forecasting • Planning reservoir releases • Monitor water quality in the Delta • Recreational use of water ways
Essential Functions Real-Time Data Collection Data Dissemination Hydrologic Database Data Exchange
Real-Time Data Collection • Satellite transmissions from remote data stations (851 stations) • Microwave radio transmissions from remote data stations (82 stations) • Slowly phasing out microwave system due to cost and better accessibility to satellite transmissions
Data Exchange • Electronic transfer of information between Federal, State and public agencies including National Weather Service, US Bureau of Reclamation, US Army Corps of Engineers • Data from 279 stations are received and stored in centralized database • Other information includes summary reports and real-time images
Data Dissemination • Government and public access • Internet Web Server • (http://cdec.water.ca.gov) • Intranet Web Server • (http://cdec4gov.water.ca.gov) • Ability to display data in various ways: plots, pictures, photos, maps, etc.
Data Dissemination Internet Database Management Website Development Application Development Tabular Data Graphs, Charts Data Analysis Maps Images, Photos Water Supply Forecasting River/Flood Forecasting Flood Operations Snow Pack Surveys
Future Enhancements • Use of Java application development (JSP, Servlets, Applets) • Viewing information using GIS presentation • Website redesign using new web portal standards • Exploring use of web services
Future Enhancements • Comprehensive database for the Division of Flood Management that includes inventory of levees in California, annual levee inspections, documentation of flood control systems, levee system evaluations, flood damage identification, and levee erosion sites
Future Enhancements • Forecasted coordinated operations with reservoir operators
