Writing OGT Tips
1. • Do the essay questions first! • Locate the two essay questions and do them before ANY SHORT ANSWERS • Test = 2.5 hours long - it's OK to spend an hour on each essay
2. Before answering prompt: • Underline key terms • Determine the type of essay to be written: persuasive, narrative, expository • Pre-write in test booklet - outline, graph, etc.
3. • ESSAY MUST ANSWER PROMPT! • Stay on topic.
4. Persuasive Essay: • MUST PICK A SIDE! • Prompt: "argue" or "persuade" • Never say "I leave it up to you" or similar • Use transitions: "first, second, third," etc.
5. Expository/Narrative Essays: • Include LOTS OF DETAILS • OK to say something is "fun" - be sure to say why! • Details to add depth
6. • Intro, three well-developed paragraphs/points (with specific details) and conclusion! • Write CLEARLY!
7. • Leave time to proofread! • You can cross out, draw arrows, make additions • Show the graders that you know how to write! • Give them a lot of opportunity to pass you.
8. Grading: • Essay: Read by two readers for development of prompt: 6 possible points x 2 = 12 points • Application: Two readers for "application" - diction, syntax, grammar: 3 x 2 = 6 • Perfect Score = 18 points/essay
