Mentoring • Working with 3 young Roma from Romania living in Manchester, UK • Tiberious • Vasil • Anina • Developing as trained community researchers and introducing them to higher (University) education in the UK • Working with partners in Manchester
Mentoring • Around 8 hours per week each • Equip with research skills that will enable them to carry out research in their community on issues related to the health and well-being of Migrant Roma (regular supervisory sessions) • Support with presentation skills and confidence in public speaking • Gain experience and confidence within a Higher Education setting (attendance at lectures and training etc) • Support with exploring further work or educational opportunities after the mentoring project has finished.
Positive images • Working alongside and involving our 3 young Roma mentors • Document their experience as researchers and in higher education • Ethos – to ensure that these young people maintain control over their own representation. • Supported by a professional photographer Ciara Leeming who specialises in work with Roma
Network of EU researchers • Identification of 9 researchers from each Member State (excluding UK) • Over 200 applications!
Network of EU researchers • To help design the fieldwork in each Member State • Assist in securing interviews with key informants • Produce a Country Report for each country • European Commission requested to see drafts of these • Share knowledge and practice throughout the project
Stakeholder seminar series/network • Holding 3 seminars over 2014 • Wide invitation: policy makers, practitioners and researchers • Focussed around three themes e.g: • Community relations • Children and care • Employment
Research • Building on findings from Roma SOURCE research • Undertaking research with national and regional policy makers, practitioners and Roma experts by experience covering the 4 key areas: • Reporting and redress mechanisms, • Children leaving care, • Employment and, • Cross community relations.
Research • Semi-structured interviews with 12 key stakeholders representing: • Local authorities/municipalities, • Law enforcement/judicial agencies, • Public and private sector employers, • Community representatives and advocates, • Social workers and • Representatives from NGOs and Roma-led community organisations.
Research • Case study approach • Designed in partnership with EU network • Rationale: national policy and experiences of implementation
Outputs • Draft country reports December 2013 • Interim report March 2014 • Final report March 2015 • Research papers 2015
