New Ideas Challenge Society • Ideas spread from Paris to the rest of France and then the rest of Europe • Ideas spread through Diderot’s Encyclopedia, small pamphlets, salons, and the courts of monarchs • The old order did not like being challenged and often engaged in censorship
Arts and Literature Reflect New Ideas • Rococo style emerges to please the middle class – it was light, elegant and charming • Classical music became popular with the growing middle class. • The novel became a popular form in literature

Lives of the Majority Change Slowly • Most Europeans were not affected by Enlightenment ideas • Most belonged to the peasant class and lived in small villages • By the end of the 1700’s some ideas of change began to be seen of equality and social justice
