Tsunami • A tsunami is a series of waves that travel across the ocean as a earth quake or volcano eruption on a seabed is occurring. Once the waves reach the shore, then its speed slows down but the height of the tsunami gets bigger. Once the waves strike the shore then they start wiping out any thing in its path. A tsunami is actually a type of flood. A recent Tsunami happened in Japan in 2011 , last year. If ever in a Tsunami try to find a safe place that can the flood can not reach such as a building, try not to stay on streets or in a car that is unsafe.
Hurricane • Hurricanes are created over warm waters of the sea, wild winds soon begin to swirl around some calm waters. The center part of the hurricane is called the eye. Hurricanes can be as much as 400miles long in width and can be as fast as 200 mph. The destructive winds of the hurricane can go on for days. Hurricanes are called by many names like the typhoon and the tropical cyclone. Each time there is a new hurricane it gets it own name so people can identify the hurricane. Each preselected names of the hurricanes are in alphabetical order and always switch from female names to male names. Some hurricanes like Katrina, that name we never be used for an other hurricane . If every in a hurricane find a safe building or area as fast as you can, you don’t want to be in a car while a hurricane is occurring , it is very dangerous.
Tornado • A Tornado forms in warm and moist air that in front of a cold front. Both low and high air pressure collide each other, this causes both winds to circulate around each other and form a spiral. A tornado looks like funnel that is made up of clouds. Once this funnel reaches the ground then the wind of this tornado can pick up cars, animals, trees, even people. The tornado can also destroy buildings and houses. The spin of a tornado’s wind can be 318 mph, that is almost faster than the speed of light. One type of tornado that forms on the water is called the Waterspout. The waterspout is a very weak type of tornado that is made up of tiny water droplets that stretches from a cloud to the sea. The waterspout is dangerous for swimmers , boats, and small aircrafts that are in this tornado. If every in a tornado try to find shelter as fast as you can , if you can’t find shelter then go find a ditch to hide in.
Flood • There are four types of flood riverine flooding, urban flooding, flash flood, and coastal flooding. Riverine flooding is when the land is draining water into a river that is connected to small streams, this river flows into the ocean. When heavy rain happens or the melting of snow, this makes the water in the river run faster . Then to river can no longer carry much water, so the riverine starts to flood and covers a landscape in dirty water. The strength of the water can carry cars, trees, and even small buildings. Urban flooding is when a city has a very heavy rain and the sewers had reached there full capacity. Then the water starts to overflow the drains and surges and starts to flood the city. Urban flooding can be dangerous for citizens and drivers. Flash flood is when heavy rain is occurring on a small stream. Then the floodwaters start to move strong and start a rushing current that cares destructive debris. This can tear down trees , and destroy any structure like a bridge or a building. Coastal flooding is when severe sea storm, and the wind starts to push up some water and form waves. These waves start to batter over the shoreline , then a eventually the waves will rip through the sea defense. Now the seawater starts to pour in on the shore and floods small islands or coastal areas. Flooding can be very dangerous for any one who is in a car, in a building , and even on the ground. If ever in a flood try to get to safety as fast as you can.
Drought • A drought is when land dries out and starts to crack, this land is now no longer useful for crops. Deserts start to spread and once deserts start to spread people start to move because people can not live without having any crops to help the people with their needs. Today more than 80 million people suffer by droughts because the land where they live in has high temperatures and very little rain . Australia has had many droughts in the past decade, Africa also has been badly effected by droughts as well. Because of heat and dryness, wildfire may occur due to droughts, like the U.S. and Australia in 2009.
Now that you have learned about some very dangerous weather and how much damage it can cause. The question is what would you do if you were in one of these disasters and how would you help others?
The following information came from the book called “ DANGER!”. If you want to learn more about these dangerous weather and more then go on pages 58, 59, 60, 61, and on page 66 of DANGER!
