What We Know So Far Unit 2 The Movement of Earth and the Seasons
Earth’s Tilt bears, beats, battlestargallactica Earth’s tilt is about 23.5˚. The tilt causes equinoxes, solstices, and the seasons. Info. applicable for Northern hemisphere* The Summer Solstice – more direct sunlight, more solar energy, more daylight than night, around June 21 The Autumn Equinox – Equal day and night, around September 21 The Winter Solstice – Less “direct” Sunlight, Start of Winter for the Nothern Hemisphere, Dec. 21ish longer night, summer for Southern Hemisphere. The Vernal Equinox – SPRING SON, March 21ish, Equal Day and Night.
Lunar Phases 8 official phases Little over 29 days for lunar cycle Same side of moon always faces us because its’ revolution time matches its’ rotation time.
Sidereal Days A sidereal day is less than 24 hours. A sidereal day is how long a spot on Earth takes to make one full rotation in space. A solar day is the time for a spot on Earth to make one full rotation relative to the sun.
Latitude Latitude is your measurement North/South. The greater the latitude, the further you are from the equator. People on the equator experience littlechange in their daylight/nighttime ratio. The poles experience longer days in the summer and very short days in the winter.
North Star Currently the North Pole points towards the star Polaris. It won’t always be the North star because of the Earth’s PRECESSION. In 12,000 the North Star will be Vega. 5,000 years ago Thuban was our North Star. The precession runs on a cycle of 26,000 years. The next North Star will be Vega in 12,000 years.
What is Precession? The cycle for precession is 26,000 years. Our zodiac sign is not the constellation visible in the sky on our birthdays. This is because of precession and the fact that the zodiac was created thousands of years ago.
The Ecliptic The Ecliptic is the apparent path of the Sun on our celestial sphere. The Sun, planets in our solar system, and moons in our solar system follow the Ecliptic.
Sun’s Angle and Directness In the summer, sunlight is more direct on the Northern Hemisphere. Light is coming in at a larger angle. In the winter, sunlight is less direct on the Northern Hemisphere, Light is coming in at a smaller angle.
