Why do we need to teach literacy in all subjects in all grades K-12? • Video from bjnesbitt’s channel • A Vision of K-12 Students Today • Written and produced by B Nesbitt • Found on YouTube
Why? What? How? … Develop a Plan!
WHY? • The Web-based system was developed to provide an easily accessible and flexible tool for school librarians and teachers • to identify strengths and weaknesses in the information-seeking skills of their students. • It is made available at no cost to users.
Teach students information literacy skills • How to use effectively the tools already being used • Learn from what they are already doing to research, evaluate, synthesize, and create new ideas, skills, and learning.
And most importantly Engage them in their learning.
WHAT: TRAILS is a knowledge assessment with multiple-choice questions targeting a variety of information literacy skills based on 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th grade standards.
WHAT does TRAILS offer? • Freely available on the Web at: www.trails-9.org • Knowledge assessment of five categories comprising information literacy skills • Downloadable results at both class and student levels • Self-administered by the librarian • Assurance of student privacy
Tool for Real-time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills • As of September, the following features are available: • Alignment of TRAILS items with the Common Core State Standards • Addition of images to select TRAILS-3 items • Creation of national benchmarks based on 2011-12 data (coming soon!) • www.trails-9.org
HOW? Trails can help teachers and librarians tailor learning to the needs of students by assessing students ability to do the following:
Develop topics. • Identify potential sources. • Develop, use, revise search strategies. • Evaluate sources and information. • Recognize how to use information responsibly, ethically, and legally.
Features in Trails: • Create an Account • Create a Session • View Assessment • Administration Details • Manage a Session • Class Report • Student Report • Benchmarks
Getting Started: • Create an Account • Create a Session • View Assessment • Manage a Session

Develop a Plan: • How Central Crossing HS – Liz Bode has used it • What she and Shannon Route at Grove City HS have planned for this year
TESTAMONIAL: Since we are a Race to the Top School, we have implemented the new Student Learning Objectives (SLO) that need to be turned in for the new evaluation system. I used the 9th grade General Literacy Test 1 as a pretest, topical tests for formative assessment and will use the General Literacy Test 2 as the posttest. Each has provided good data so far for my SLO and evaluation during our year of practicing it all. I highly recommend that all media specialists use this website. Debby Howdyshell, Liberty Union HS.
