  1. Spring Term 2014 Newsletter Year 3 Happy New Year and welcome to the Spring Term! We had a very enjoyable and productive Autumn Term and look forward to our new, geography-led topic, ‘Living in my world: caring for places and environments’. We will be exploring the importance of being ‘global citizens’ and looking at some ecological issues that affect our planet. What will we be learning this term? Literacy We will be focusing on a range of genres including: Myths and Legends; fables; performance poetry; persuasive writing and stories with related themes. We will continue to develop our dictionary and thesaurus skills and work on spelling rules and strategies. Maths We will be adding 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by partitioning and recombining; subtracting using bridging tens, place value and number facts; multiplying and dividing, including commutativity and finding a remainder; ordering and finding fractions of shapes and numbers; telling the time, reading digital and analogue clocks; reading and recording position, direction and movement, including compass points; measuring in cm and m and weighing using g and kg; data handling- drawing and interpreting bar graphs. Context for Learning: ‘Living in my world: caring for places and environments’. Writers’ Workshop The children will be involved in a range of interesting writing tasks relating to our topic work. Our class text for this topic is ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. They will write letters of persuasion, produce information sheets, leaflets and fact files and compose poems on the theme of the rainforest. Creative Corner Our creative work will involve drawing and illustrating maps, making observational drawings of creatures found in different habitats and composing short pieces of music to represent the rainforest. Research and Information We will be locating places and environments on maps and globes, including water features and rainforests. We will compare the climate of the rainforest with our own and find out about the lives of the tribes living in the Amazon rainforest. Data Den The children will compare the heights of trees in the rainforest; read and interpret climate and rainfall graphs; identify waste in our community and any trends and patterns in the type of waste found on a litter hunt in the park. They will create tally charts and graphs. Engineering and Construction We will be exploring techniques for making simple pneumatic systems and designing and making a moving animal using our research on creatures living in the rainforest. Investigation and Exploration Our science topic is ‘Operation Sustainable Future’. Focusing on how humans affect the local environment. We will be going on a litter hunt in Goytre park and sorting the waste into categories. We will also be looking at water usage and ways to conserve water. ICT We use ICT to support our work in all areas of the curriculum and this term we will be: using the internet to research questions and find information; use programs to produce charts and bar graphs. We will also be using the laptops to publish written work. Our focus work in ICT will be ‘Exploring Simulations’. Welsh We will be revising and developing language patterns to give, and enquire about, personal details, including hair and eye colour. Incidental, everyday phrases will continue to be practised and extended. R.E. Our topic is ‘Belonging and Believing’. Pupils will gain understanding of the places and ways in which people worship. We will be looking at the Christian and Jewish faiths as part of our work.

  2. P.E. This term our PE sessions are on Wednesdays and Fridays. Gymnastics/Dance – Wednesday Games – Friday Please could you provide a note if your child is unable to do P.E. Also, they will need trainers, tracksuit/jogging bottoms and sweatshirt for outdoor games. Mrs Fitter (HLTA) will continue to take the class on Fridays. She will be teaching RE, Welsh and one session of PE and working with the class on their ‘Beat that!’ and ‘CLIC’ tests and spelling rules. Handwriting I have attached the objectives for Year 3 handwriting for your information. We are continuing to work on a legible, joined style. We made some excellent improvements last term, but practice makes perfect! Homework/Learning Logs Homework will be sent home on Thursday to be returned the following Wednesday. Please encourage the children to present their written work neatly, with dates and titles underlined. The standard of Learning Log work and homework generally was excellent last term, so thank you for your input. Our topic promises to be a very stimulating and thought-provoking one which I am sure will result in many interesting conversations at home!
