Successfully Integrating NNES into CSU Classes • Communication Difficulties • Reading: a lot of reading • Listening: used to focus on details not main ideas • Speaking: accuracy vs. fluency, miss chances to involve in a conversation • Writing: lack of practices for academic writing, plagiarism, paraphrasing, organization • Cause stress and frustration

  3. Successfully Integrating NNES into CSU Classes • Communication Difficulties (cont.) • cultural inferences, idioms, slangs, jokes • abbreviation. ex: TBA • among NNES having various L1 • Advice • clarify if necessary. ex: write down • provide references, short explanation for NNES

  4. Successfully Integrating NNES into CSU Classes When NNES seems to not understand • During conversation • speak slowly & simply • with key words • In class • use visual aids ex) ppt, subtitle • provide handouts
