What is it? • Cancer is a term to describe a diverse group of diseases in which some of the cells in body become defective. • The following 8 cancers have been highlighted as priority cancers because they account for more than 50% of all cancer deaths. • Lung Cancer • Melanoma • Non-Melanocytic skin cancer • Colorectal cancer • Prostate cancer • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma • Cervical cancer • Breast cancer.
Women: Most common diagnosed are: • Breast cancer, colorectal cancer, melanoma and lung cancers. • Men: Most common diagnosed are: • Prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and melanoma.
There has been an increase in the number of cases reported? WHY? • The most common treatments include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. New ways of treating cancer are continually being developed.
Why was it selected??!! • It was identified because it contributes significantly to disease burden. • Being a NHPA it’s main goal is to reduce the incidence of mortality from cancer and the wider impact it has on the community. • Cancer is the leading cause of total disease burden in Australia. • Cancer is the leading cause of Mortality, contributing to 30% of deaths in 2005. • It is estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 3 men will be directly affected by cancer at some stage in their life.
Risk Factors • Biological: • Sex: Your gender will give you a greater chance of developing some cancers. Eg Breast Cancer is more common in females than males. • Genetics: Family history, predisposes you to be more susceptable
Risk Factors • Behavioural: • Diet: An individuals diet has been linked with onset of cancer, eg if you eat a diet high in fat you have an increased chance of developing colorectal cancer. • Tobacco smoking: Linked to cancers such as Lung Cancer. • Alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity and exposure to sun: All these can increase the risk of cancer, but all can be detected with early detection programs to alert the individual and change their behaviours.
