What is Cancer? • Cancer is a diverse group of diseases. It is an abnormal growth of cells which tend to spread in an uncontrolled ways that can invade and damage the tissue around them. • The eight type of cancers in the NHPA are: • Lung Cancer • Melanoma • Non – Melanocytic skin Cancers • Colorectal Cancer • Prostate Cancer • Non- Hodgkin lymphoma • Cervical Cancer • Breast Cancer
What makes Cancer an NHPA • Cancer is an NHPA because • Cancer was the largest contributor 19% to the total burden of disease in 2003. • In Monetary terms the direct cost of cancer was estimated at $2.8 billion in 2000-2001. • One in three men and one in our women will develop cancer before the ages of 75 • 88,000 new cases are diagnosed every year in Australia. • In 2006 106,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Australia (60,600 males and 45,400 being females). All these Statistics show why cancer is a NHPA
Prevention Strategies • Efforts used to control caner are Primary prevention, early detection and therapy, these tools and activities will vary with the type of cancer but mostly will include a combination of the three. • Primary prevention includes public health programs which advertise the effects of cancer, • Early detection improves survival and other outcomes, things like screening for breast and cervical cancers have contributed to substantial declines in death rates to do with these types of cancers • Treatments for cancer include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and counselling support services. • All these areas are improving cancer outcomes.
Prevention Programs • The government runs prevention programs such as • Sun smart program which is a strategic program to target skin cancer • Breast cancer (the pink ribbon) • Mo-Vember (prostate cancer) • Smoking adds on t.v about cigarette damage • Cervical cancer- injections for all young women in schools. • Relay for Life. • Shave or a cure (leukaemia foundation)
