2. The Secretary of State, in March, required all Local Authorities to draw up a plan for improving the performance of all schools, excluding academies, below the floor standard.
Floor standard is 60% L4 combined English and Maths
4. Some schools face specific challenges, and KCC accept that part of our leadership role is to help them overcome these challenges, as well as creating an environment in which high performing schools can improve further as part of a self-sustaining network.
5. There are 4 categories within Kent Challenge
The DFE is particularly interested in Categories 1 and 2 and are only using data from 2006 – 2010

Three or Four years 2006 – 2010 below floor
In Kent there are 22 category 1 schools (Ashford has 1); and 27 category 2 schools (Ashford has 2)
7. Category 3 Schools Category 3 schools have three years below floor (2006 – 2011)
Kent is committed to working with these schools to ensure they do not move into category 1 or 2.
In Kent, there are 43 category 3 schools (Ashford has 4)
8. Kent Challenge - Prevention The final category is Kent Challenge – prevention, schools two years (2006-2011) below floor or at risk of an Ofsted category judgement.
Ashford has 5 schools in this category.
9. Support for Kent Challenge Schools is intense so what about the rest of us?
10. In Ashford, in addition to the 12 National Challenge Schools, every school due Ofsted (16 this school year) will receive as much support as they need
