  8. What is the UI Foundation? The preferred channel for private contributions to the University of Iowa A nonprofit IRC Sec. 501(c)(3) organization We fundraise according to priorities set by the university president in consultation with deans, directors, and other campus leaders. Organized in 1956 to help the university meet needs beyond those provided for by state support, and to reach new levels of distinction by generating significant private gift support

  9. What is the foundation’s purpose? MISSION: “Advancing the University of Iowa and fulfilling the aspirations of those it serves.” The foundation exists solely to provide support for the university. Gifts made through the foundation are used to support students, faculty, staff, facilities, and programs at the UI.

  10. The university’s comprehensive $1.7 billion fundraising initiative • Quiet phase:2008-2013 • Public phase: 2013-2016 • Progress: $1.064 billion (7/18/2013) • 63% of goal • 59% of timeline

  11. A comprehensive university campaign is . . . . . . a collaborative effort by all engaged and caring members of the University of Iowa community to advance our university and maximize its local, national, and international impact, for the greater good.

  12. Why A Comprehensive University Campaign? Raises more money Accelerates philanthropic growth and sustains elevated performance

  13. Why A Comprehensive University Campaign? Enlarges the culture of philanthropy among academic leaders, faculty, volunteers and donors Clarifies and prioritizes the University and unit visions Gives President, University leadership, and campaign volunteers an opportunity to communicate the vision Provides a powerful multi-year branding platform

  14. For IOWA. Forever More. comprises several subcampaigns that have either taken place in recent years or will take place before the campaign concludes, including: Recent campaigns for the College of Dentistry and College of Public Health

  15. The future of Phil During the comprehensive campaign (from now through FY16), any gift to any fund at the UIF counts as both a campaign gift and as your participation in the WE ARE PHIL Faculty/Staff Giving Program. 2016 After concludes, WE ARE PHIL will live on as our annual giving program for UI faculty and staff.

  16. WE ARE PHIL: Goals • Raise awareness of impact and importance of philanthropy at the UI • Make faculty/staff giving a growing and positive part of campus culture • Increase participation rates among faculty and staff, year after year

  17. Why is faculty and staff giving so important? • Our contributions provide resources that help ensure the UI’s ongoing excellence—which benefits: • Students • Our community • The state of Iowa • The world • Ourselves / Each other

  18. Why is faculty and staff giving so important? • Faculty and staff investment in the UI sends a powerful message to those outside the university. • It announces to alumni, friends, corporations, foundations, public officials, and community partners that we support the UI and feel it is worthy of their support, too.

  19. What is my role as a volunteer leader? You lend credibility and stature to We Are Phil and convey that it is an initiative endorsed by faculty/staff. You inject energy, initiative, and enthusiasm into the program. You can set an example through your own philanthropic generosity. You help build meaningful relationships between the UI Foundation and the university, as well as with our donors (external and internal). You help articulate the university’s need for philanthropic support to an audience of your peers. You can endorse, affirm, verify UI Foundation/We Are Phil messages.
