Why change the structure? • Streamline scheduling, reduce workload and errors • Make course information and resources more accessible and easier to work with for faculty • Provide flexibility while ensuring student course offerings across the grid • Can no longer sustain the workload that the current system fosters
Scheduling Template Courses rolled over from Spring 2010 as master schedule/template for Spring 2011 For Humanities only - attempted to add electives that are offered every other year (included from Spring 2009 schedule) Random electives not offered on a sequence schedule were NOT included This template serves as the structure to use to schedule classes in your BOS
New Guidelines • Change the courses offered, but must use the blocks of times shown for their BoS • May work with other BoS to “swap” time slots • General Education offerings should remain in time blocks provided. Courses offerings can be changed, but the GenEd categories cannot • Any changes or request for new time blocks require a written justification from the BOS, approved by the Chair/Director and Dean, and submitted to the Registrar’s Office
Issues to be resolved The Spring ’10 grid assignments, used as the basis for the rollover, are unbalanced. The goal is to correct the balance for Spring 2011 so that we can stop reviewing the allocations several times each scheduling period. We need to view courses, including electives, as part of the curriculum, not tied to one or more faculty members. Review and correct course offering sequences such as every fall or spring, every semester, every other fall or spring, etc.
End Goal… • Resolve LAS’s grid balance challenges • Institutionalize the Purchase College curriculum, including elective courses while maintaining flexibility when needed • Formalize course times and balance course offerings across the grid and throughout the week • Standardize Arts course offerings • Improve service to students by ensuring that deadlines are respected and honored • First steps in a new scheduling system that will guide us to a viable 2 year course scheduling format
