Demographics • Mongolia is the fifth largest country in Asia. • A total area of 1.6 million square kilometres • Population - 2.78 million • Population density – 1.7 persons per square kilometre • In 2010, 36.7% of the population were residing in rural areas.
Structure of organizations involved in NCD prevention services
Prevalence of NCDs and their risk factors in Mongolia and trends • Diseases of the circulatory system,neoplasms and injuries have remained the leading causes of mortality since 1995. • In 2010, the leading causes of mortality per 10 000 population; • circulatory system diseases 23.61 • neoplasms 13.02 • injuries and poisonings 10.11 • The health statistics for 2010 • CVD 37.7% • Cancer 20.8% • Injuries & poisonings 16.1%
STEPS (2009), 1 in 4 (26.4%) Mongolian adults and I in 2(53.8%) adults above 45 years of age have high risk of NCDs. • High blood pressure 62.7% • Overweight & obese 53.6% • High cholesterol level 40.5% • Current smoking 27.5% • Diabetes 6.3% • (STEPS 2005vs2009); Smoking, physical inactivity, hypertension, diabetes and hypercholesterolemia remained stable, while fruit and vegetable consumption decreased and prevalence of overweight increased over the years.
